The Writer in Wellies: inspiring children, supporting teachers, transforming writing.
Helen doesn’t just visit schools as an author for a day —as a former teacher with over 20 years experience, she works in partnership with teachers to help children grow as confident, motivated and resilient writers. The challenge is urgent. Recent research suggests that: Fewer than 3 in 10 children enjoy writing for pleasure. Over half of Year 6 children are reading more than a year behind, with 12% more than four years behind and only 39% reading at or above age expectations. This gap affects confidence, creativity and resilience across learning. That’s why Helen's school programmes go beyond one day visits. They are designed to: * Reignite a love of reading and writing through relatable, animal-inspired stories. * Build resilience, confidence, and creativity, helping every child see themselves as a writer. * Equip teachers with practical strategies and fresh approaches to engage reluctant writers. Helen helps schools not just host an author day, but make real, lasting progress in closing literacy gaps and inspiring children to find their voice — on the page and beyond. |

" The children have not stopped talking about your visit and Lucy!! They all loved the workshop, the quiz was great and pitched well to all levels and the writing character profile prompts were great! We thoroughly enjoyed today; it was very inspiring for our budding authors."
